ETA: English Language testing for pilots

OAA offers the English Test for Aviation (ETA), a specific purpose language test for private, commercial and airline transport pilots. Developed jointly by OAA and ER and in consultation with independent experts in the field of language testing, the ETA is fully approved for ICAO proficiency testing by the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority and by other national authorities.

The ETA provides users with an innovative and highly effective measure of the full range of English language abilities required for safe radiotelephony communications. The test provides for both direct and semi direct testing of English speaking and listening skills and is administered on an individual basis by two specially trained and qualified examiners, one an aviation specialist and the other an English Language expert.

The ETA can be delivered by OAA-ER examiners, or a test centre can be by airlines and aviation training organisations under licence.

OAA and ER currently operate ETA centres in the following locations:

  • OAA Oxford
  • OAA Hong Kong
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Douala & Yaounde, Cameroon

For more information about the ETA including licensing and fees, contact henry@emery-roberts.co.uk or visit the ETA web pages.

Aviation English teacher and rater training in 2012

We offer scheduled courses for teachers and raters of aviation English at our Oxford Training Centre. These intensive courses are taught by the authors of Aviation English and Check Your Aviation English (Macmillan Education). The 5 day (40 Hour) courses include comprehensive pre-course reading and research tasks and cover the following areas:

Teacher training: Theoretical and practical training sessions covering the key areas of language teaching content and methodology, syllabus design, materials development and micro-teaching practice.

Rater training: A detailed analysis of the ICAO rating scale and holistic descriptors, guided practice in applying the criteria to the speech culminating in a formal assessment of rating skills, and a practical introduction to standardisation and quality in language testing and assessment.

The aviation familiarisation module is an optional component of both the teacher and rater training courses and is designed specifically for those without a professional background in aviation. Taught by OAA subject matter experts, the module includes 7.5 hours of classroom instruction covering the core subjects in flight operations. This training module also includes a flight in a B737 simulator observing pilots undergoing multi crew cooperation training and a visit to the ATC tower at the airport.
