Multi Crew Pilot Licence (MPL)

The Skills Assessment ensures we can identify before they embark upon training those who are highly likely to succeed during the training course and subsequent aircraft type training. Assessment takes place over two days at our Centre for Career Development, using methodologies and tools specifically developed and validated to meet airline needs.

Although it might initially sound daunting, the whole process is actually quite enjoyable, and it also enables potential students to have a closer look at us as a training provider and to meet both staff and students in the day-to-day working environment.

ATPL Ground Training is conducted at our airline training centre at Oxford Airport. The first phase of theoretical training takes 15 weeks and is followed by internal OAA tests. These thoroughly prepare you for the official JAA exams - the first 7 of which follow immediately thereafter.

After a short break, you complete the 12 week second phase followed by the remaining 7 JAA exams - again only after you have refined your skills in the internal OAA tests. The JAA examinations are sat at our Oxford training centre which is also an official CAA Examination Centre.

You will also revise and reinforce your ATPL theory studies at appropriate points during flight training, delivered predominantly through CBT, and recorded on our Learning Management System.

Passing all 14 JAA examinations is a pre-requisite to commencing ‘Core’ flight training.

“Core” is basic flying training. The ‘Core’ phase of flight training is conducted at Oxford Airport, Kidlington. Our equipment and instructors are first class - operating from a long established training centre, allowing you to concentrate on achieving the MPL qualification. You will gain the skills that would normally be obtained when studying for a Private Pilots Licence (PPL) and Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL), completing 90hrs of flight training; 75 of which will be in our TB20, 5 in a Zlin and 5 in a Seneca aircraft along with 5 hours in a simulator.

You will learn how to fly in visual and instrument conditions and also complete the required night flying. Included are 63 hours dual training, to include European route flying, and 12 hours solo flying. The aircraft will be flown using multi-crew procedures from the mid-point of the Core Phase.

“Basic” is the applied instrument flying phase in a multi-crew environment. This is an 8 week period focusing on developing the students flying skills to an advanced level. This is achieved through the use of simulators, by the end of which, the students will have to prove their proficiency to the equivalent CPL IFR standard.

The students are introduced to the multi-crew environment through the use of Crew Resource Management models. Highly experienced instructors will put the student-crews through their paces, exposing them to normal and unusual flight scenarios. The students will become accomplished pilots in both flying and monitoring roles.

During the ‘Basic’ phase students will make use of the Flight Management Systems Trainer (FMST) to practise the training details prior to entering the simulators – enhancing the quality of the training. The crews will carry out the training details on the most recent addition to the Oxford’s simulator fleet – the CRJ 200.

You will complete 90 hours in the CRJ simulator which encompasses a full day/night all-weather visual system.

The first 3 weeks of the ‘intermediate’ phase will involve type technical ground school study – the preliminary work to lay the foundations for the soon to follow Type Rating.

You will the travel to one of the Academy’s type training facilities located throughout the world where you will spend the next two weeks aquatinting yourselves with the aircraft you’ll eventually earn a Type Rating on.

You will complete 20 hours on the Full flight simulators which are used to add realism and enjoyment to the learning process.

The final section of multi-pilot training can again be delivered through on of the Academy’s type training facilities where you will complete your type training for the specific aircraft type. Another 40 hours will be spent in the full flight simulators prior to finally taking to the skies in the actual aircraft that you have become so familiar with. Your Type Rating will be endorsed after completing 12 take-offs and landings.

The course duration is 65 weeks to include base training and leave periods.
