Modular Airline Pilot Training

Modular courses of training are designed for individuals who do not wish to undertake a full-time course of Integrated training or who wish to ‘stagger’ their training by completing ‘Modules’ of JAA Approved training over a period of time having already gained the pre-entry requirement of a Private Pilot’s Licence.

We offer the key components of professional pilot Modular training:  ATPL(A) Theoretical Knowledge training and a full-time professional course of 3 flight training modules (MECPL + IR + MCC) which are collectively know as our WAYPOINT PILOT PROGRAMME.

We also offer ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge training and multi pilot training as discrete modules.

Waypoint Pilot Programme

To act as Pilot-in-Command of a multi-crew airliner you need an Airline Transport Pilots Licence.

Completion of the course leads to a CPL(A) with IR(A) and MCC – A ‘Frozen’ ATPL(A) - becoming unfrozen once you have achieved a minimum of 1500 hours of experience - 500 hours of which must be flying multi-pilot aircraft.

OAA Minimum Entry Requirements

  • JAR-FCL Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • A minimum 80% pass in ATPL Ground Examinations with OAA
  • Minimum age on commencement of training of 17 years

Ground Training

Armed with your Private Pilot’s Licence you are now ready to start your professional training for your ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence). Welcome to Ground Training!

Whichever form of Modular Ground Training you prefer, one thing is common - namely the need to take and pass the JAA ATPL(A) Theoretical Knowledge examinations.

You will need to sit a total of 14 examination papers. We divide the subjects into two phases - each phase being undertaken on completion of the appropriate phase of ground training.

You may complete your Ground Training in one of two ways: FULL-TIME CLASSROOM BASED (CBR) TRAINING OR DISTANCE LEARNING (DL). There are advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. Whichever route suits you best, there is no getting away from the plain fact that you have to pass these exams and pass them well. Airlines often require you to have achieved an average pass mark of at least 85% with no more than 2 attempts at any examination - despite the official pass mark for each exam being 75%.

Whether you choose to attend one of our 28 week full-time training courses, which are timetabled throughout the year, or study through our distance learning course, it is a fact that our students have consistently achieved excellent results in the JAA ATPL ground examinations.

Full-time Ground School Instruction - 2008 Dates

This approach is the most straight forward and requires you to attend a full-time course of Ground Training with us at Oxford Airport - with up to 24 students in a classroom.  You will benefit from dedicated teaching from our team of ground instructors - using the very latest teaching techniques and computer aided instruction.

The following dates have been confirmed for ATPL full time Ground School in 2008:

  • 25th February 2008 - COURSE FULL
  • 28th April 2008 - CBR 42
  • 23rd June 2008 - CBR 43
  • 25th August 2008 - CBR 44
  • 20th October 2008 - CBR 45
  • 8th December 2008 - CBR 46

Distance Learning

If you approach your ATPL(A) Ground Training through Distance Learning then you will have to complete 2 key sections:

  • Complete our Home Study Course
  • Complete 2 x Two-week Skills Revision Classes with us at the Oxford centre

Our Home Study course allows you to commence training at any time once you have your PPL(A) and learn at your own individual pace.  Study time is flexible, however once you have sat your first JAA examination, you then have up to 18 months to complete the 660 hours study time and pass all 14 written exams.

If you are a distance learning student, it is a JAA requirement that you complete at least 10% of your training in a classroom environment.  This we achieve through our 1 week Skills Revision Classes which are run on a regular basis throughout the year.  You have to complete a total of 4 weeks of Skills Revision Classes through our Distance Learning course and these are completed two weeks at a time, and two weeks for each phase of training.

We only require you to pay for your home study course when you enroll and then you simply pay for your Skills Revision Classes as you take them.  You will never pay for any one specific Skills Revision Class more than once - but you may repeat your attendance at that specific class on a future date at no extra charge.
